DONATION APPRAISAL QUESTIONS
Tool Appraisal for Charitable Donation: Common Questions
What qualifies as a 'qualified appraisal' for a tool donation?
A qualified appraisal is prepared by a qualified appraiser in accordance with IRS rules and USPAP, dated no earlier than 60 days before the donation and completed by your filing deadline. It's required once your claimed deduction for donated tools exceeds $5,000.
Do I need Form 8283 for a smaller tool donation?
Noncash donations over $500 require Form 8283, but the qualified appraisal and appraiser signature in Section B only apply once the claimed value exceeds $5,000.
How do you determine the value of donated tools?
We research comparable sales in the current secondary market and weigh brand, age, and condition to arrive at fair market value, the price a willing buyer and seller would agree to.
Does the appraisal fee depend on how much my tools are worth?
No. IRS rules require that a qualified appraiser's fee not be based on a percentage of the appraised value, and we set our fees the same way regardless of your report's conclusion.
The donation already happened earlier this year. Is it too late for an appraisal?
The appraisal must be dated no earlier than 60 days before the donation date and completed by your filing deadline, including extensions. Tell us the donation date and we confirm whether that timing works.
How long does a donation tool appraisal take?
Turnaround varies by project and the size of the collection. We confirm timing before we begin, and expedited service is available when a filing deadline is close.
